Warmifontaine and the slate quarry.Warmifontaine was occupied from the 5th century BC by the Celts. In 1994, during excavations of burials at the 'La Plane' site, the only iron sword to be found in Ardennes was unearthed. The village of Warmifontaine is not typical of this region. Whereas the surrounding villages are essentially rural, Warmifontaine is more industrial in terms of its architecture. This is due to the fact that the only local industry dating from the 19th century is based here: the slate quarries. This village gradually built up around the site of the slate quarry and the Sainte-Barbe well. At the site known as 'La Plane', there are many workers' houses which were built at the beginning of the century by the Society for Slate quarrying when the Saint-Martin well was opened. The well only remained open for a few years due to a low output.
