Grandvoir, the castle and ironworks.

Created in 1622, the Grandvoir ironworks did not play a hugely significant role in the iron and steelworking industry in the region of Luxembourg under the old regime. However, they were closely linked to various different factories by their owner.

In 1852, the ironworking industry was abandoned and the ironworks became a mill. A sawmill was also added. The old industrial buildings currently serve as an agricultural shed.

THE CASTLE
The Grandvoir castle may well have its origins as a strong house. The current building is no earlier than 17th century in date. The date of 1642, inscribed on the chimney, may indicate its construction date. It is a quadrilateral castle-farm building made of shale sandstone rubble stones which encloses an interior courtyard and contains living quarters dating from 1727, stables and a barn which were reconstructed in the 18th century. Access is via an arched doorway. The courtyard was repaved during the 20th century with a motif of circular decoration. The main door lintel was replaced in 1720.

THE COLLARD CHAPEL
In 1843, the Collards had an imposing Neo-classical chapel built in Torimont, on the hills of Grandvoir in the direction of Tournay, which served as a family burial site. Today, the Collard chapel is very dilapidated; the crypt where six or seven tombs are lined up is walled in.
